What are the Best Ab Workouts You Should Do?

Whether you have taken up jogging, joined a gym or purchased some workout equipment, ab workouts also need to be done. For lots of people, the shape of their abs is an indicator of what overall shape they are in. While the truth is a bit more complicated, there’s certainly nothing wrong with wanting strong and well toned abs. One of the best ab workouts you can do, especially for the lower abdominal area, are reverse crunches. You already know about regular crunches and how good they can be but, when done by themselves, they are not enough to tone you the way you want. Reverse crunches are quite helpful and a great addition to any workout routine that you choose to do. Whereas with a normal crunch, your knees are on the floor, with the reverse crunch you keep them off the ground, in a bent position, while holding your hands behind your head. During each crunch you need to bring your head and your knees as close together as you can get them without having to strain your body. You should feel the pressure in the abdominal region. You already know that crunches are effective for working the abs and, if you do them on a medicine ball, you’ll have better results because you will greatly enhance your range of movement. Medicine balls are weighted balls that are around the same size as a soccer ball and you usually see them in gyms and they shouldn’t be confused with bigger stability balls (which can also be very useful). Another good thing to do on the medicine ball is a plank which is where you put your hands on the ball while you hold the rest of your body in a kind of push up position. To make this even more challenging, do leg lifts while performing this exercise. If you aren’t familiar with these exercises, though, practice them on mats before you do them on medicine balls.

There are many machines that help you with ab workouts, but if you look at them closely you’ll find that most of them have you do an exercise that’s similar to traditional crunches in one form or another.

That’s because the “crunching” motion is what stimulates and strengthens your abdominal area, though the focus of the exercise or machine will vary and some will target the lower or upper abs. The weighted crunch machines made by Nautilus and other brands are great for workouts because they let you control exactly how much resistance you work through and allow you to adjust based on your own capacity. Crunch machines are typically more effective and more safe than doing your own crunches on the floor.

Ab workouts can take many different forms, though they all work on the same groups of muscles.

Aside from regularly exercising your abs, you need to make sure you do a fair amount of cardiovascular and resistance training to keep the rest of your body healthy as well.
